Work History

I am a York based professional photographer who has been doing freelance work for several years. I have always had a real passion for photography since specialising in it during my Fine Art degree at Nottingham Trent University. Using photography as an artistic medium helps me become more aware of my surroundings, when its possible I like using the natural light available to capture a moment in time.

I specialise in community, events and art based projects using a reportage style of photography. I have worked for a number of organisations, including York Museums Trust, City of York Council and York Theatre Royal. I have undertaken photography work for the Tracey Chevalier Exhibition at York Art Gallery, York 800, York Stories and illuminating York.

I have curated several exhibitions; including the York Mystery Plays 2012 exhibition which was set in the Museum Gardens. This involved looking through over 2,500 photographs taken over 7 months then editing them down to 65 photographs that would tell a visual story of the ‘Making of the Mystery Plays’ this was shown in the Museum Gardens whilst the play was on. Four large scale double photographs (4.5 x 7 metres) which I designed, linked to the eight themes of the plays were also displayed on the back of the seating area as part of the exhibition.

I judged York Photographic Society’s annual photography competition for the second year running in 2013. I have acted as a judge for York Camera Club and Last year I judged for Bishopthorpe Camera club and York Camera Clubs annual competition. I have been asked to judge for York Camera Club this year and York Photographic Society’s 2017 competition.

I have worked on case studies for Joseph Rowntree Foundation looking at Dementia Friendly individuals and organisations across Yorkshire.

Another project linked to JRT was Innovations in Dementia and JRF was – The Personal is Political: Women’s Experience Of Dementia

I have designed and put together a photographic book for City of York Council on behalf of York Stories and Auden House. Last year I worked with Griselda Goldsbrough a freelance artist and York Museums Trust on a project with the Children’s Centres.

In January I had my photographs published in the Guardian newspaper with a story that looked at the impact of the receding flood waters and the struggle for York residents hit by the devastating winter weather.

Recent projects include;

Using York Castle Museum’s social history collections as inspiration to look at ways to engage with the shape and body and create an artistic response. Looking at some of the themes of keeping up appearances, the body uncovered, health and well being. This involved participants from YEW Project (City of York Council) who might not normally visit the Museum setting, giving them opportunities to become informed of what the Museum has to offer and give them ownership when interpreting the objects.

Working with MKM Creations and PWP Design making a photographic exhibition for their garden stand at the Chelsea Flower Show 2016.

An exhibition of Profile Photographs along with four other photographers. This was a project that I organised and curated, working with Abbigail Ollive – Head of Communications at York Theatre Royal. The photographs look at the staff in all their different roles and how they make the Theatre tick. These photographs will also feature extensively on the York Theatre Royal’s new website which is due to be launched soon.

I have been working with Griselda Goldsbrough on an outreach project involving working with homeless young people.They looked at objects and stories from the 1st World War exhibition at the York castle Museum. The project finished with making 3D photographs of the made art pieces and printing out a 3D model of one of the students dressed as a 1st World War solider at York University.

I have been on a panel helping to judge the 2017 Staff Benefits calendar for the Arts in York Hospital Team
